Born in Koprivnica, near Krško, on 2 February 1963. He graduated from the Agronomy College in 1984 and became an Agricultural Engineer. From 1984 to 1990 he worked as an agricultural extension expert. In 1990, he established a family business engaged primarily in trade and the organisation of agricultural production. Bogovič is one of the founders of the first democratic political party in the former Yugoslavia, the Slovenian People’s Party. He was elected Mayor of the Municipality of Krško in 1998 and held this post until December 2011. In 2008, he was elected to Slovenia’s National Assembly for the first time and re-elected in December 2011. In February 2012, he started his tenure as Minister for Agriculture and the Environment. He was elected President of the Slovene People’s Party on 2 March 2013. On 20 March 2013, when a new Government was elected, he again became a member of the National Assembly - in constructive opposition. MEP since May 2014.
