Ensuring Stability in the EU Neighbourhood
The Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE) is responsible for overseeing the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and other defence-exclusive measures of the European Union. This Committee plays a vital role in shaping and implementing the EU’s defence strategy, military capabilities, and global security partnerships, working towards a more autonomous and integrated European defence policy.
Its key areas of focus include, among others:
- Monitoring threats to the territorial integrity of the EU and its Member States, as well as risks to EU citizens.
- Reviewing and implementing strategic defence decisions and policies.
- Countering hybrid threats, including cybersecurity, foreign manipulation, and critical infrastructure protection.
- Improving military mobility and infrastructure to enhance readiness and protection against foreign threats.
Additionally, in collaboration with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, SEDE plays a key role in matters concerning the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).
Advocating for a Stronger European Defence Union
We must urgently pursue a systematic overhaul of Europe’s defence. The EPP Group has long advocated for the establishment of a European Defence Union, where Member States can align strategically and share a common understanding of threats.
The EPP Group insists that the EU and its Member States must step up their defence capabilities and take concrete steps toward a genuine Defence Union. We support:
- A true European Single Market for defence, investing in next-generation defence technologies.
- Enhanced cooperation and integration of European defence capabilities.
To this end, we have drafted a blueprint for the Defence Union’s future functioning and continue to push for a realistic and practical roadmap toward its establishment.
