To make public health a European priority

We have consistently called for the creation of a European Health Union that brings true benefits to EU citizens. This Committee helps us get closer to this goal.

In December 2024, the European Parliament’s political Groups decided to upgrade the Subcommittee on Public Health to a full Standing Committee. This is the first permanent, legislative, independent Public Health Committee in the history of the European Parliament.

According to its approved powers and responsibilities, the Committee will deal with public health matters related to pharmaceuticals and medical devices, programmes and specific actions, health crisis preparedness and response, mental health and patients’ rights, health aspects of bioterrorism, the European Medicines Agency and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as well as relations with the World Health Organization.

It is also crucial to strengthen EU health policies, address the shortage of medicines, improve treatment and prevention of diseases, enhance supply chain resilience and promote cross-border cooperation to better prepare the EU for future health crises.
