Statement on the Crisis in Agriculture
The EPP Group in the European Parliament is by far the strongest defender of the interests of European farmers. During the last reform of the CAP, it was the EPP Group that ensured a substantial EU agriculture budget. We continue to stand up for a common agricultural policy and together with our farmers amid the current crisis on the agricultural markets.
Over the past 18 months, market conditions in vital sectors such as dairy, pigmeat, beef and fruits and vegetables have deteriorated to such an extent that the survival of many producers is now in serious jeopardy. Difficult international market conditions, together with production increases in certain sectors, have had a negative impact on prices. Unfair trading practices in the food supply chain make the crisis even worse. The EPP Group demands fair and balanced relationships between agricultural producers, processors and the retail sector. We urgently request that the European Commission enforces existing rules and puts in place, where necessary, an effective regulatory framework to safeguard farmers’ interests in the food supply chain.
Our proposals for tackling the crisis:
As we face up to the current crisis, we should remember that the medium to long-term prospects for agriculture are positive. Estimates suggest that increased agricultural production will be necessary to feed a constantly-growing world population. Innovation in EU agriculture will be key. Encouraging young people to enter the farming sector is a challenge which must be met. The EPP Group is fully committed to helping our farmers through these difficult times. We will continue to play an active part in assisting our farmers to cope with market turbulence.
