Born in Lublin, Poland, he is married with two daughters. He graduated from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and completed postgraduate studies at the College of Enterprise and Administration. Since 2002, Mr Hetman was Deputy Director, and from 2005 to 2007, Director of the Regional Development Department in the Marshall Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship. In 2007 he was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Regional Development of Poland where he was responsible for the implementation of the Eastern Poland Development Programme, European Territorial Cooperation and the European Instrument of Neighbourhood and Partnership. He has been the President of the Polish People's Party (PSL) in the Lubelskie region since 2010. He was Marshall of the Lubelskie Region from December 2010 to June 2014. He was also a member of the Committee of the Regions, where he participated in the works of the Education, Youth, Culture & Research and the Territorial Cohesion Policy Commissions. MEP from 2014 - 2023 and since 2024.
