As a Member of the European Parliament’s delegation to Georgia, Polish EPP Group MEP Krzysztof Lisek has sent a letter to Minister of Justice of Georgia Tea Tsulukiani requesting the personal visit to former prime minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili currently in prison. The delegation will travel to Georgia from 3 to 4 June. In a letter addressed to Mrs Tsulukiani Mr Lisek stressed that the aim of the visit is to ascertain the humanitarian conditions in which M. Merabishvili finds himself currently and to verify whether Mr Merabishvili’s rights to a just defence are being respected.
- The arrest of Mr Merabishvili – a potential candidate of President Saakashvili’s United National Movement in the presidential election scheduled for October – causes a concern among European politicians and raises suspicion that one tries to eliminate from the race for the presidentaial post the main candidate of the opposition - Krzysztof Lisek said in a comment.
- The aim of the visit is to ascertain whether the conditions in which M. Merabishvili finds himself currently are in conformity with international standards, whether his right of being heard is respected and whether he’s granted the right of access to lawyer and family - added Mr Lisek.
