The 16th of October will mark the 7 year anniversary from the assassination of Daphne Carauna Galizia.

The PN Head of Delegation in the European Parliament David Casa stated: “The circumstances around Daphne’s assassination were made possible by the unbridled corruption and impunity that Malta remains plagued with today. On the anniversary of her brutal murder we must honour not only her memory but also take stock of the state of the rule of law in Malta. This is why we are securing a European Parliament debate during the next plenary session that will discuss the state of justice in Malta as well as the institutional capture that has enabled a few to enrich themselves off the backs of Maltese citizens.”

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism will also be awarded on the 23rd of October at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This will be the 4th edition of the Prize which is awarded annually. The setting up of the Prize was spearheaded by MEP Casa when he formed part of the European Parliament Bureau. It is intended to recognise excellence in journalism and inspire investigative journalists to hold power to account without fear or favour.

On the 16th of October, a vigil in memory of Daphne Caruana Galizia is also being organised by the media freedom organisations of the Media Freedom Rapid Response, which will be taking place in front of Residence Palace in Brussels from noon.
