"I will not accept that European rights are not applied in Malta. Thousands of residents cannot live in peace due to excessive noise levels. A balance can be found between commercial activity and residents’ right to live their lives. The government cannot continue ignoring these rights. I welcome the decision of the Committee which has requested the Commission to present a detailed report on the implementation of the European Noise Directive in Malta."

Brussels: The European Parliament’s Petitions Committee today heard and debated the petition submitted by MEP Peter Agius (EPP, MT) and Nationalist MP Albert Buttigieg regarding the enforcement of European rights on Noise Pollution during rest hours and legal noise limits. The petition, presented on behalf of thousands of residents—particularly those in Sliema and St. Julian’s—calls for immediate action to ensure effective control of noise disturbances.

Anna Maria Baldacchino from the Sliema Residents Group addressed the European Parliament Committee, explaining how residents have endured prolonged daily disturbances from amplified music or noisy roadworks for years. Baldacchino stated that they had to escalate the issue to the European Parliament because, every time they approached the Maltese authorities, they were told that nothing could be done. This is despite the fact that European directives, which are part of Maltese law, exist but are not being implemented.

MEP Peter Agius stated that it is unacceptable that the Noise Action Plan for Malta Agglomeration 2019-2024 has still not been implemented, leaving residents exposed to excessive noise levels without protection. This, despite the fact that action plans are mandatory under European directives.

The Petitions Committee accepted the petition and requested the European Commission to investigate Malta’s lack of compliance, enforce noise control regulations, and explore remedies for those affected.

MEP Agius said: "Let’s continue defending our right to a quieter and healthier environment because only in this way can we achieve a better quality of life."
