Today Gabrielius Landsbergis MEP appealed to the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, with a request to investigate whether Viktor Uspaskich hasn’t confused the public and private interests and violated parliamentary rules by employing the wife of his supporter, the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE ) party, G.Watson, as his assistant.
Victor Uspaskich by employing the wife of an influential MEP’s wife as his personal assistant , in my opinion, is violating the rules of the European Parliament, prohibiting administrative resources and the right to use said resources for one’s personal political purposes that are unrelated to direct MEP activities. Recruiting the wife of his political intercessor, it is likely Uspaskich seeks to use his influence in order to preserve his legal immunity and, in this way, avoid criminal charges in Lithuania, " - said G.Landsbergis.
According to G.Landsbergis, Mr. Graham Watson, during the previous parliamentary term, publicly urged MEPs to help Uspaskich avoid court proceedings and wrote articles for the European press, where he wrongly accused Lithuanian legal institutions for alleged bias.
"The European Parliament should not be a shelter in which one can evade justice and escape charges of political corruption - large scale fraud and deceptive accounting management ," - said G.Landsbergis.
