Statement by Elmar Brok regarding the publication by Marek Siwiec of an article on Yulia Tymoshenko's case

"I am appalled by the contents of an article which is published on Mr Siwiec' blog. First of all Mr Siwiec breaks the confidentiality of the meeting, secondly he relates in a distorted manner what was the political message delivered by the two European Parliament's Special Envoys to Ukraine". Last Tuesday 15 October the Committee on Foreign Affairs heard a confidential briefing by Messrs Cox and Kwasnieski on their activities relating to the Yulia Tymoshenko's case. The two envoys are in fact working towards finding a solution for Ms Tymoshenko that would give her partial pardon, release her from prison and allow her to travel abroad in order to receive the urgent medical treatment she needs. "At no point did the two envoys indicate that Ms Tymoshenko has to accept to give up her own legal rights and position. I am deeply shocked by the fact that a parliamentarian like Mr Siwiec is of the opinion that the ban from standing for election should be an integral part of the political solution proposed by our Parliament. Mr Siwiec's position is in contradiction with the decision taken last Tuesday by the Conference of Presidents".
