EPP President Joseph Daul MEP and EPP Group Vice-Chairman Vito Bonsignore MEP have welcomed the approval of the technocratic caretaker government by Tunisia's parliament, yesterday.

Mr Daul and Mr Bonsignore also hailed the adoption of the new constitution as a milestone in the democratic development of Tunisia.

After months of stalemate between Islamists and secularists, the National Constituent Assembly passed the text with an overwhelming majority of 200 votes out of 216, a few days ago.

Mr Joseph Daul and Mr Vito Bonsingore said;

"This vote has clearly sent out a message of hope and relief. With the new caretaker government in place, we support the Prime Minister-designate's efforts to run the country in a stable environment with new elections firmly in sight. We hope that the government will soon set a date for these elections.

The Tunisian example gives us hope. Other people seeking reforms can take heart from the Tunisians. They can follow in their footsteps.

We hope that this Constitution ushers in a new era of stability in Tunisia which, in turn, translates into economic growth and real improvement in people's daily lives."

This is the first adopted Constitution since the uprising against former President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, three years ago.
