Bulgaria: congratulations to the government on the successful investigation of the terrorist attack in Burgas
Commenting on the results of the deliberation in the Consultative Council on National Security in Sofia, the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul said:
"On behalf of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, I congratulate the Bulgarian Government on the successful investigation of the brutal incident at Sarafovo Airport last July. We condemn again, in the strongest terms, the cruel and senseless murder of innocent people. The organisers and perpetrators of this and similar attacks must be brought to justice. Terrorism in all its forms is one of the most dangerous threats to peace and security and is completely unacceptable. This is why we welcome Bulgaria’s policy of cooperating with all friends and allies in the global fight against terrorism.
It was with great dismay I found out today that the leader of the PES, Mr Stanishev, has taken the side of Hezbollah in the debate following the disclosures of yesterday, as one can read on the organisation’s official web site. In times of important decisions, when the credibility and responsibility of Bulgaria is tested, all political leaders should stand together.
In light of the fact that the attack was carried out in an EU Member state, I support Bulgaria in its intention to present the findings of the investigation to their European partners. Together we will discuss specific measures to preventing similar terrorist attacks in the future."
"Only when the results of the investigation into this attack are made clear can justice be brought about in Bulgaria and the safety of citizens in Europe and elsewhere be maintained. The course of action by Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran and brings terrorism to Europe, cannot be tolerated in silence," added Elmar Brok MEP, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament.
