Schuman Medal to be awarded to Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz
The EPP Group has decided to honour the lifetime of service of Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz with the Group’s highest award, the Robert Schuman Medal. Tomorrow, the medal will be handed over at the Conference on Family on Contemporary Europe in Kraków, by Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul.
Joseph Daul commented: “By accepting this medal, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz joins other great European recipients like Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Helmut Kohl, José Maria Aznar, and of course Pope John Paul II, and other men and women who have helped make Europe a peaceful and united continent. Priests like Cardinal Dziwisz were the soul of one of the greatest peaceful transformations that this continent has ever seen. We also honour the Cardinal’s work in helping to build Poland into the great European democracy it is today.”
"I am very satisfied that our political group is honouring the work of important Poles in building democracy and in strengthening universal values in social life. Cardinal Dziwisz is one of those distinguished persons. Well known around the world while accompanying Jean Paul II, he is successfully continuing his mission as the Head of the Church in Kraków", commented Jan Olbrycht MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group responsible for intercultural dialogue and religious affairs.
The EPP Group has been awarding the Robert Schuman Medal since 1986 to individuals who have distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner and with personal commitment to European integration.
