Parliament names Sophie Scholl Building, remembering anti-Hitler movement

With the actress who played Sophie Scholl in an award-winning film, the European Parliament inaugurated a building in her name. Scholl was one of the leaders of the White Rose student movement against Hitler in the darkest days of World War II.

EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber noted how Scholl, her brother Hans and others who were executed for spreading leaflets against the Third Reich ''fought for a free Europe, for us, for a democratic Europe."

Parliament President Roberta Metsola called Sophie Scholl ''a symbol of courage, of resistance, a woman, a girl who inspired and inspires still.'' Actress Julia Jentsch, who won the Berlinale Silver Bear for her role as Sophie Scholl, said the values of the White Rose ''have to be fought for, protected, preserved every day anew.''
