A boost for the EU's cyber resilience

Today, MEPs will vote on a new law to improve cyber security in the EU, the so-called Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2).

"This new law will improve the resilience and incident response capabilities of the public and private sector and the EU as a whole”, declared Eva Maydell MEP, who led negotiations on the Directive on behalf of the EPP Group.

“NIS2 is not a silver bullet, but it will bring together a real EU cybersecurity culture and ecosystem, setting out minimum rules for effective cooperation and updating the list of sectors and activities subject to cybersecurity obligations. The recent attacks on the Nordstream pipelines have demonstrated the vulnerability and fragility of our critical infrastructure. In a world of hybrid warfare, we must protect the internet cables upon which our economies depend, as carefully as our borders and pipelines", said Maydell, who is a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.

“Europe’s cyber resilience and cyber security are critical to our economic resilience. We must take decisive action to increase preparedness and deter behaviour that violates international law, on and offline. The new Directive is adding a piece to the bigger puzzle for gaining greater resilience", explained Maydell.
