Love trade, not war

Trade love, not war.

For the EPP Group, the United States is a vital strategic ally. Shared values, strong economic ties, and a commitment to global stability make this partnership indispensable. In an era of shifting global challenges, a close and cooperative transatlantic relationship is more crucial than ever.

"A strong EU-US relationship is in our mutual interest," says Jörgen Warborn MEP, EPP Group Spokesman on International Trade, ahead of the European Parliament’s plenary debate on 'Preparedness for a New Era of Multilateral Cooperation or Tariffs'.

"The EU and the US must collaborate to reinforce economic and diplomatic ties. The US is the EU’s largest trading partner, while the EU is the fourth-largest for the US. Maintaining a stable and predictable trade relationship is essential for businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. Any disruption could have serious economic repercussions," stresses Warborn.

“When war rages, allies on both sides of the Atlantic must remain focused on supporting a fellow democracy in its defence against an aggressive autocratic regime. Failure would be a strategic defeat for us all. Allies should not be burdened by excessive tariffs; strategic security partnerships and joint trade objectives matter more," stresses Michał Szczerba MEP, Spokesman on the US in the Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.

"Now is the time to act as architects of innovative solutions in the fight for peace - not for division, but for unity," adds Szczerba.

Szczerba quotes former US President Ronald Reagan, "We should beware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world."

The EPP Group champions free and fair trade as the foundation of economic growth. The EU must remain open to negotiations to ease trade tensions, but it must also seize new market opportunities to protect its economic future in an unpredictable global landscape.

"The EU must engage in constructive dialogue while upholding fair trade practices and avoiding measures that could harm transatlantic ties," Warborn concludes.
