Reacting to the outcome of the European Summit that took place yesterday in Brussels, Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, said:

“The EPP Group stands for a strong, high-profile European Commission. The most important step towards this result was taken on Tuesday with the election of Jean-Claude Juncker as European Commission President. With his election, we have put a face on Europe’s importance. For all other nominations, quality should be put before haste.”

Manfred Weber welcomed the decision taken yesterday by the EU Heads of State and Government to prepare for further sanctions against Russia: “The EPP family fully stands beside the Ukrainian people. Our message is clear: we want a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. As long as Russia remains part of the problem, and not part of the solution, we will not lift the pressure on Russia.”

A delegation from the EPP Group and the European People's Party, led by EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber and EPP President Joseph Daul, will pay a visit to Ukraine next week on 23-24 July for meetings with high-level politicians and civil society representatives.
