EPP Group unambiguously confirms historic von der Leyen Commission
The EPP Group in the European Parliament today unambiguously confirmed the new European Commission, under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen. Chairman Manfred Weber welcomed the convincing confirmation in the European Parliament: “Seven months after the European elections, we can start to deliver on our commitments to European citizens. Let’s get to work!”
This Commission is unique and historic as it is led by a woman and consists of more women than any other Commission in the past. “With our strong EPP team in the College, the EPP has delivered on gender balance, where others speak about it in their Sunday speeches.”
The policy priorities of the new College are firmly rooted in the EPP Group’s ambitions for the future. “We are proud that our EPP priorities are a crucial part of the agenda in the years to come. In 2024, Europe will have the most ambitious and inclusive climate policy in the world, a European border and coast guard with at least 10 thousand officers, we will have transformed Europol into a European FBI, launched a master plan to fight cancer, created millions of jobs and decided on the definitive borders of the European Union.”
The next five years will also be decisive for whether Europe keeps its heart and soul or if it becomes irrelevant in a more brutal world. ”Our societies are under pressure. People are looking for stability and identity. We need to protect, promote and guarantee the European way of life. That is why in the next five years we also need to determine the geographical limits of the European Union. For us, that means Turkey is an important partner, but cannot become a member of the EU.”
