EPP Group leads the charge to recognise Juan Guaidó as interim President of Venezuela
A long simmering crisis in Venezuela is reaching boiling point. There have been serious allegations of fraud during recent presidential elections, an opposition boycott and widespread protests against the current President, Nicolas Maduro. On 23 January, Juan Guaidó, the elected leader of the National Assembly, declared himself the interim President of Venezuela. The US - and more than 20 other countries - have recognised him as such while Russia, Bolivia and Cuba are among those supporting Maduro.
EPP Group Vice-Chairman Esteban González Pons describes the situation in the country for Venezuelans and explains why the European Parliament must recognise Juan Guaidó as interim President of Venezuela. He calls on EU Governments and Institutions to do the same until new free and transparent elections are called.
