Do not ban tech which can reduce CO2 from trucks

The EPP Group wants cleaner trucks and lorries but also stresses the importance of harnessing the full potential of new European technologies. "To successfully shape the transport transition, we need all technologies at our disposal and a fair competition between the best innovations", said Jens Gieseke MEP, the EPP Group's lead negotiator on the revised rules slashing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from trucks.

The EPP Group strongly opposes attempts from the Greens, the Socialists and Liberals in the European Parliament to obstruct fair competition for best innovators. "If they succeed with their proposals, we will for example not be able to use carbon dioxide (CO2) neutral fuels, such as synthetic fuels, in heavy-duty vehicles. This is ridiculous. It would be a missed opportunity", said Gieseke.

"Politics must be technology-neutral. That is why the EPP will stand up for a realistic 2040 carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction target of -90% for trucks and an opening for CO2-neutral fuels", Gieseke concluded.

The European Parliament’s plenary is expected to vote on its position in late November
