Karas and Brok call on EU Commission to examine situation rapidly

Vice-President of the European Parliament, Othmar Karas MEP, and the Chairman of Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Elmar Brok MEP, have expressed their concerns about developments in the Czech Republic: "Governments must be responsible to Parliaments. Forming a government which has no majority in Parliament does not contribute to the stability of the Czech Republic and is tantamount to disrespecting the principles of the Lisbon Treaty", said Karas and Brok today.

Elmar Brok and Othmar Karas called jointly on the European Commission to rapidly examine whether the forming of the government is a breach of the fundamental values of the EU: "The European Commission, as the guardian of the Treaties, must look into this", stressed the two MEPs.

“Respect for the rule of law and fundamental European values must be scrutinised and enforced, independently from which country or political party is concerned”, stressed Karas.
