Clean and affordable energy is just around the corner
Lower prices for electricity, a real choice of energy supplier for consumers and much stronger incentives for new clean energy technologies. These are among the concrete results that can be expected after today’s approval by the European Parliament’s Industry Committee of the last four pieces of legislation that make up the Clean Energy Package.
"The EPP Group has been successful in defending an ambitious Clean Energy Package for our citizens and businesses. Our energy must be affordable, clean and secure for all users in Europe", said Françoise Grossetête MEP, Chairwoman of the EPP Group’s Working Group on Economy and Environment.
"It is a challenge to integrate renewables and to improve flexibility on the market while at the same time raising investments in our energy infrastructures and networks. But it is essential for the security of the European supply of energy", she added.
The Clean Energy Package was launched in November 2016 and highlights the objectives of putting energy efficiency first, achieving global leadership in renewable energies, and providing a fair deal for consumers.
According to the European Commission, the detailed impact assessment of the proposals estimated that they would generate 900,000 jobs and an increase of up to 1 per cent in GDP over the next decade.
Every household has paid on average €686 a year for electricity. The average difference between the incumbent supplier's standard offer and the cheapest offer on the market is more than €50 a year in the EU.
