Build, build, build houses

While housing remains a Member State responsibility, the EPP Group insists that EU policies should support - not hinder - the supply of affordable housing for all. In a new position paper adopted today, the EPP Group outlines its plan to overcome critical housing challenges.

“The housing crisis affects every European country. For young people, in particular, finding an affordable home has become nearly impossible. There is only one real solution: to build, build, build. That is why the EPP Group is committed to unlocking the full potential of Europe’s building sector. We want to cut permitting times and introduce more flexibility in environmental legislation without compromising on sustainability,” said Dirk Gotink MEP, Vice-Chair of the Parliament’s Committee on the Housing Crisis.

“We’re also determined to support those who are too often overlooked: middle-income households. These people fall between the cracks - earning too much for social housing but too little for the private market. They deserve targeted support and smart policies. Europe's credibility is at stake - we must prove that we can fulfil our promise of affordable housing for future generations,” Gotink stressed.

“Today is a great day for Europe and the EPP Group. Our party is taking the lead in establishing a common stance on a crucial issue for all Europeans - especially young people: housing,” said Alma Ezcurra Almansa MEP, EPP Group Member in the Housing Committee.

“Unlike the failed policies of the left, which rely solely on price controls, stifling developers and property owners, and creating legal uncertainty, the EPP has a clear approach. We must mobilise all our resources to increase supply, cut regulatory and administrative barriers, protect private property, and ensure that Europe’s middle class - especially families and younger generations - have access to affordable housing with security and freedom,” Ezcurra Almansa emphasised.
