MEP Peter Agius, who last December organised a conference in Brussels on building codes in Malta, welcomed the news that the government has announced 17 building codes. He stated that this confirms the validity of Isabelle Bonnici’s call in the European Parliament for Malta to adopt building codes, just as all other EU countries have already done. However, MEP Agius insists that "We cannot accept another three years of accidents, with Malta now being the country with the highest number of construction-related incidents in the whole of Europe."

Peter Agius added, "We are EU citizens and must benefit from EU standards and rights. It is a shame that the government has been dragging its feet for years instead of introducing proper building codes for our country. We have already seen too many victims and accidents. I call for urgency in implementing these building codes as soon as possible, rather than waiting the three years mentioned."

Peter Agius also recalled that, in response to his intervention in the European Parliament, European Commission Vice-President Séjourné offered the Commission’s technical assistance to Malta in drafting building codes tailored to Maltese techniques and materials. This would help prevent construction accidents and ensure that cases like those of Miriam Pace and Jean Paul Sofia never happen again, allowing families to live safely and peacefully in their homes.
