Peter Agius MEP

During a debate in plenary with new Commissioner for Rule of Law Michael McGrath – MEP Dr  Peter Agius called upon the European Commission to stand by the Maltese people in their fight against corruption and corrupt politicians. ‘The Maltese are seeing corruption scandals every week, from the girlfriend employed in phantom jobs to the 400 million vitals fraud to a power station cloaked in the deals leading to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.’ said the MEP. ‘The people of Malta look up to Europe and ask, where is the shield of values and good governance that we looked upon in all these cases? Conspicuous by its absence!’ said MEP Peter Agius.

Dr Agius stated that the Maltese expect action because they are tired of paying tax money only to see others enrich themselves at their expense. The PN MEP pointed out that the fraudulent €400 million contract should have been terminated from day one as it violated the Public Procurement Directive.

MEP Peter Agius criticised the European Commission for not taking action on the public procurement directive, not even when it was officially asked to investigate by himself through a formal complaint on the Vitals contract in October 2021.

Dr. Peter Agius urged Commissioner McGrath to ensure that the Commission no longer turns a blind eye when EU laws are not respected by the Member States. Peter Agius reiterated that citizens want a European Commission that stops fraudulent contracts and take action against abuses of public funds. “Only then can we prevent widespread corruption both in Malta and across Europe”.
