MEP Peter Agius Hosts ‘Her Voice in Science’ Discussion

Brussels, 6 March 2025 – On the occasion of International Women’s Day, MEP Peter Agius (EPP, MT) hosted a high-level discussion, ‘Her Voice in Science,’ bringing together leading women in scientific research and development in the European Parliament to address the persistent gender gap in STEM fields.

The event, streamed live on Facebook, featured distinguished speakers: Stephanie Buttigieg, a PhD student in Astronomy at Cambridge; Christine Gatt, a biomedical scientist at Mater Dei Hospital; Sana Grillo, a sport psychologist and athlete; Maria Petra Agius, an IVF specialist; and Anne Marie Grech, an educator. MEP Agius was also joined by Questor Miriam Lexmann and Sanal Senem from the European Commission. The session was moderated by Journalist Ana Tortell from Lovin Malta.

In his opening remarks, MEP Agius emphasized the urgency of fostering a truly inclusive innovation ecosystem in Europe. “To make the leap for a Union of Innovation, we need more than a Quantum Strategy and AI ambitions—we need all hands and minds on deck. Yet, too many girls are still discouraged from pursuing science subjects and careers in STEM. It is time to bridge this gap,” he stated.

The panellists shared their experiences, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for women in STEM. Anne Marie Grech stressed the importance of early exposure to science, stating, “I strongly believe that the first step in addressing this challenge begins with exposure and encouraging curiosity.” Stephanie Buttigieg called for stronger institutional and media support for women in STEM: “So here’s my call to action for policymakers and the media: Support and protect the women in STEM who are stepping into the spotlight to inspire the next generation. Give them the platforms they deserve.”

The discussion also addressed structural barriers, with Christine Gatt pointing to work-life balance as a critical issue: “Another challenge is work-life balance, where women are expected to sacrifice the careers, they have worked so hard for to raise a family—something that their male counterparts are not expected to do.”

Representing the European Commission, Sanal Senem highlighted the role of EU initiatives in promoting female scientists: “The MSCA places great importance on the promotion of female role models, including outstanding MSCA supervisors, coordinators, and fellows who inspire girls and women all over the world to participate in science.”

MEP Agius reiterated his commitment to supporting women in STEM and ensuring that European policies reflect the need for gender inclusivity in innovation. “The gender gap in STEM is not just a women’s issue; it is a challenge for Europe’s competitiveness and innovation. Today’s discussion is a step towards ensuring that every talented mind—regardless of gender—has a voice and a place in shaping our scientific future.”

The event reinforced the European Parliament’s commitment to gender equality in science, paving the way for future initiatives to support women in STEM.
