The PN Head of Delegation David Casa has welcomed the conclusion of the process to establish intergroups for the new legislature, which will include an Intergroup focused on Anti-Corruption. Mr Casa was one of the proponents of the Intergroup within the EPP.
All intergroups require the support of at least 3 political groups in order to be established, thereafter facilitating MEPs’ work on specialised areas.
“At its core corruption is the theft from citizens who rightly expect more forceful EU action to combat it. This Intergroup will bring together MEPs from across the political spectrum to champion legislation and other measures to ensure that the toolkit to combat corruption is bolstered through action at EU level,” stated MEP Casa.
During this legislative term, the Anti-Corruption Intergroup will focus on strengthening the EPPO and OLAF, the effective application of the Rule of Law conditionality mechanism, increasing transparency of the recipients of EU funds, and strengthening media freedom, pluralism, and journalists’ safety among other objectives.
MEP Casa is already the EPP’s lead negotiator on the EU’s flagship anti-corruption legislation, the Combatting Corruption Directive, which will enter into inter-institutional negotiations early next year.
“This Intergroup will also assist in ensuring broad support within the EP for robust anti-corruption measures both in terms of the legislation currently being negotiated as well as pushing for more legislation when this is needed,” concluded Mr Casa.
