On 28 January 2025, MEP Inese Vaidere (EPP Group) was elected Vice-Coordinator of the newly established EP Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union (HOUS). She is also the only Latvian MEP to serve on this committee. "I am very pleased to have received the confidence of my colleagues to become one of the leading MEPs on the Housing Crisis Committee," said Vaidere.

"The issue of affordability and quality of housing is acute in the European Union and in Latvia, which is why we created this special committee. The housing shortage is based on both high prices and lack of accessibility. Also, it affects all citizens, regardless of age or income level. For example, it is very difficult for young people to start an independent life, start a family and feel secure and stable about their future. It is also difficult for senior citizens to pay the high heating bills for uninsulated flats. The housing problem affects everyone, which is why I will work in this special committee on the housing crisis to improve the situation and help our people," explains the MEP Vaidere, EPP Group Vice-Coordinator of the new committee.

The Special Committee on the Housing Crisis will be in place for one year and will be tasked with finding solutions for decent, sustainable and affordable housing. These include assessing the impact of housing shortages on inequality, demography, poverty and social exclusion, analysing current relevant EU, national, regional and local housing policies, and proposing further measures. MEPs will assess whether cost of living indicators and related policies adequately take into account real trends in house prices and rents, analyse existing EU legislation, state aid, and propose improvements and changes to the law. The Committee will also contribute to the development and further implementation of the European Affordable Housing Plan and the European Housing Strategy.
