EPP Group welcomes electricity market reform proposals

High voltage post

In principal, the EPP Group welcomes the European Commission long awaited proposal on the Reform of EU’s internal electricity market.

"It is positive that the Commission took a rather cautious approach and thereby resisted calls for revolutionary changes to the merit-order system or even an institutionalisation of the emergency measure of a price cap. Such measures would be short-sighted. Our electricity market functions in principle, we simply don't need major interventions and I am glad the Commission agrees with that", said Christian Ehler MEP, Spokesman of the EPP Group in Parliament's Committee on Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.

"Today's proposals focus on the long-term market and incentives for investments for renewables and storage to increase flexibility. These specific changes to the existing market design will help to combat price peaks but also help us achieve our climate ambitions. These are highly relevant changes to the existing market. Given the importance of this reform and since we have waited for the proposal for a long time, a fast-tracked legislative procedure with the Council should be considered", Ehler stressed.
