Let Frontex do its important job

The EPP Group will today vote in favour of granting the discharge for the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex for the year 2020. There is no reason not to grant it. Its finances are in order and a discharge should not be denied for politically-motivated reasons. The EPP Group will continue to support Frontex in its important job to help Member States protect the EU's external border.

“EU Agencies' discharge should mainly focus on financial control. In the case of Frontex, there is no issue with compliance with budgetary rules. There is no reason not to give discharge to the EU European Border and Coast Guard Agency. Frontex is an important element in the protection of the external borders of the European Union. By postponing the discharge further, we are calling into question the very role of border protection in the Union. Let's support it and show that the job of Frontex matters", said Tomáš Zdechovský MEP, responsible for the Frontex discharge.

“The shortcomings in the management of the Agency have been remedied, the recommendations of the Frontex Scrutiny Working Group implemented, and individual misconduct held accountable. These improvements in such a short time and under simultaneously the most difficult geopolitical conditions should be acknowledged instead of waging a politically-motivated campaign solely aimed at weakening the protection of our external borders”, said Lena Düpont MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Frontex Scrutiny Working Group.

“The EPP Group will continue to support Frontex in fulfilling its fundamental rights framework. And we will continue to support the Agency in its crucial role in helping Member States protect the EU's external borders. An area of freedom, security and justice without internal border controls is inconceivable without effective protection of the external borders", stressed Düpont.
