MEP Paulo Rangel on Croatia’s Path to Schengen

Visiting Croatia's border with the Western Balkans, the EPP Group's Paulo Rangel saw effective policing and respect of human rights regarding migrants, showing the country is ready to join the EU's Schengen zone of open internal borders.

With EU support, Croatia has put in place the latest surveillance technology to secure its 1.000-kilometre external border, says Rangel.

Granting Croatia Schengen status while it also joins the euro on 1 January 2023, and including Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen, would send a strong signal to the Western Balkans about their future EU aspirations, he adds.
