European Parliament elects Commission President, backs Venezuela talks
With strong EPP Group backing, the European Parliament elected fellow EPP politician Ursula von der Leyen as European Commission President. It also approved a Resolution supporting talks between the opposition and the regime of President Nicolás Maduro. It pressed the regime to disarm paramilitary groups and ensure humanitarian aid. If those talks fail, the EPP Group backs new sanctions against the Maduro regime.
