“It is with great emotion and pride that I heard the news of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Malala Yousafzai”, said the Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber MEP, on Friday.

"Last year, when the European Parliament, with the support of the EPP Group, decided to award her the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, this is what we were hoping for.

With her extraordinary courage and determination to fight for the right to education and freedom for women in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, Malala is an example to us all. She reminds us that in many parts of the world, freedom, equal rights and education cannot be taken for granted, and that people of good will need to step up for these values", he said.

"The EPP Group stands at the sides of all those who, like Malala, fight around the world for these fundamental rights", Weber concluded.
