Ensuring stability in the EU neighbourhood

The Subcommittee on Security and Defence plays a crucial role in supporting the Committee on Foreign Affairs on issues related to the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the European Security and Defence Policy. Its primary responsibility is to hold security and defence decision-makers accountable and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the Balkans, South Caucasus, Africa, and the Middle East.

This subcommittee primarily focuses on military and defence issues and works towards increasing cooperation and coordination among EU Member States to achieve collective security goals.

Advocating for a stronger European Defence Union

The EPP Group remains committed to increasing the security of European citizens by pushing for greater cooperation and coordination among EU Member States around defence issues. We believe that a future European Defence Union is the best way to ensure swift and decisive action in the event of a security threat.

We have been advocating for the establishment of a European Defence Union where Member States can align strategically and share a common understanding of threats to develop joint situational awareness capabilities. The EPP Group insists that the EU and its Member States must step up their defence capabilities and take concrete steps towards a genuine Defence Union. To this end, we have drafted a blueprint for its future functioning and continue to push for a roadmap with realistic and practical steps towards its establishment. We have also secured €500 million in EU funding for joint R&D defence research.
